Default Canon i860 4800X1200 dpi?

I have just purchased a Canon i860. While it claims to be a 4800X1200DPI printer I am wondering what I should set my PPI to in Photoshop to resize for printing?

Nobody seems to want to touch this so let me try it a different way. I've heard that you don't want to go over the printers resolution capabilities (e.g. keep it between 240 and 300 DPI given 300DPI is the resolution of most inkjets) or it actually looks worse. Is this true with the i860? Is the DPI rating the same as the resolution or is it just an indication of how well it blends colors?
