Default Epson Photo 820 Cartridge Woes

Aaaargh, I have an Epson Stylus Photo 820 and I've been going through the same headaches as some others...streaky/skipping test patterns despite multiple times through the self-cleaning procedure. I just got this printer in January and I have not used it that much (which, I know, contributes to the cartridge problem).

I was printing an 8x10" photo the other day on Epson's heavyweight matte paper, and there were sections where the black ink just disappeared, leaving sections with weird - or no - coloring. There was no rhyme or reason to the skips, either; it was not all the way across the page and it was not confined to one area of the image. I can scan it and post it if this would be helpful.

Nope - hate it. Just stick with optical.

No, cropped slightly, but overall reduced in dimension, actually.

This particular one I printed using Epson's default photo setting, for quality. I printed it out of PhotoQuicker 3.0 since I'd never used it before and was curious about how it worked.

Full size? It's a 1073x1470 bmp at 16.7mil., 4+ in size.

Here it is, appended w/ my copyright but still its original size and file format:

By the way...Some of the test patterns have had streaking of the black ink on them. And some of my previous photos have had what I call a "lizard skin" effect, where it appears the black ink is coming out too heavy. I need to scan an example of one of those so you can see what I mean. It seems worse on pictures I print using digital camera correction, but it's done it on prints on which I did not tick that option for.

Default Epson Printer problems

When I used the Epson Photo printers, I had a similar problem. I had installed a brand new black cartridge and I started having similar printing problems. I used the self cleaning procedures many times (at least 10) and the problem would not go away. I finally installed a new cartridge and the problem cleared.

This is all really good to know. I was able to print 18 pages of text with this cartridge yesterday, and it turned out okay. I'm going to try more photographs later.

Both cartridges are well on their way to being empty, so I'll see soon enough if new cartridges solve the problems. I sure hope so, because the first photos I printed on this were great!
