When the print head is manufactured, the channels are filled with a liquid to prevent the head from drying out in the package. The cleaning cycle is initiated automatically so that the liquid can be flushed out, and the channels can be primed with ink.

It doesn't use paper during a head cleaning, but you should print a nozzle check after each one, just to make sure the nozzles have been unclogged.
