I'm a rooky who is just starting to look at this color profile thing. One of my first questions may be pretty elementary to some but do these profiles somehow change how a particular printer mixes ink to produce colors?

As I understand it, the profile specifies the range of colors that are available in the device's color space andalsosome form of "transformation" of the color information to suita specificprinter/ink/paper combination. As a (very much over-simplified) example, if sending RGB values of 100,100,100 to the printer results in an actual color of 100,120,100, the profile will convert the 100,100,100 to values in the area of 100,80,100 to get the correct color out of the printer. Since a typical printer profile is on the order of300k-700k, each profile obviously contains a lot of information.
