I am trying to find out if the new ip4200 can be set to print cd's like the ip4000.

I've bought my last Canon if that chip blocks third party ink.:-x

Could be like the epsons where there will be 3rd party chips with 3rd party ink. But I agree with you, one of the main reasons I went canon was the ease of using 3rd party ink. Knowing my luck HP will start offering simple inktanks.
