hi,

i have been looking around for the ultimate canon printer to go with the photos i have been taking with my eos 20d. i have noticed that the ip8500 has an excellent 8-ink printing system and very good reviews.

however, the ip5200 has smaller ink droplets (1 picoliter vs 2...) and a variety of other new stuff that the ip8500 seems to be lacking. it makes me think that there is a new ip85XX class printer on the horizon.

does anyone have any news of such a thing ?

Every 6 months they have a new printer out so you can bet they are woking away.

PS: The IP5200 is pretty close to the IP8500 except it only cost $129 compared with $300.

The highest class canon i'm aware of that's out is the mp900 or the mp950 IIRC depending on whether you are in Japan or elsewhere. It's not as cool as the ip8500 in the fact that it only offers extra light cyan/magenta like the ip6600 but also offers the pigmented black like the ip4200/ip5200 do. Costs an arm and a leg too.. and is a multi-functional.

The ip8600 is the japanese equilivent. to the ip8500. The next in in line in japan is the ip8700... if i'm understanding my japanese correctly... but franky I only know a couple of vowels and only a couple things in kanji.

"2005年11月29日 21:55
全弾1pl、9600×2400dpi、8色+1色(顔料ブ ック)インク
のiP8700とか*ったり・・・・・?"

So i'm pretty sure this says the ip8700 was released 29nov2005 offering 8+1 color printing... (?pigmented? black)

But don't take my word for it... I can only find one or two references to the ip8700 in a language i'm hardly literate in. and I can't find it on canon.jp's website.

hello again,

here we are some 4 months later, so i'm giving this message a little bump...

is there any fresh news out there. i'm going to feel really stupid if i buy a 5200 to have an 8700-type printer come out two weeks later. thanks,

scott

There is presently no ip8700 on amazon.co.jp, and my source wasn't exactly Canon them selves. You can always ask canon them selves, well you could in I could find the dang e-maill address.

Near as I'm aware, the next great printers are the pixma pro 9000 and 9500, both a3, one with specs similar to the ip8500, the other taking pigment ink.

You can still froogle up a ip8500... it's still a top notch printer. Or you can get the ip5200 which is 1/2 the price, and you'll experence 1/2 the stupid factor if they release a 1pl edition of the ip8500.

Or go ip6600D. 2/3 the price.
