I took the USB lead from the back of the PC by mistake and hear a static kind of noise when I put it back in. The display on my R300 was all garbled so I immediately turned it off. The red maintenence light faded off. Now it won't power on at all. I've tried a different power lead, I've tried leaving it off overnight - nothing. Does it sound like I'v buggered it up? I didn't think a usb connection could do this kind of damage.

If the USB port in the computer is wired wrongly, it could -- it's unlikely today, but I've found such ports in the (fairly distant) past.

USB ports include a power supply, and if that line became connected to a data line, for instance, it could well fry something.

Could also be caused by a short in the printer cable, of course -- the static noise you heard suggests there was arcing somewhere.

Will the printer power up with the data cable disconnected?

I think you need to have a tech look at it -- looks like something is either disconnected or blown.
