I have a i9900 printer (8 BCI-6 color cartridges) and iP4000 (4 BCI-6
and 1 BCI-3e cartridges). I understood that none of these cartridges
contain a chip. However, looking for a 'cleaning' cartridge on ebay, I
see that cleaning cartridges (that contain no ink, just a cleaning
solution) are sold for use in specific color slots. Upon inquiry, the
seller claimed that BCI-6 cartridges do contain a chip, that mandates
using each cartridge in its one specific slot.

Question for the gurus here... Is this true? Do BCI-6 and BCI-3e
cartridges really contain a chip? IOW, do I need to buy 8 cleaning
cartridges for the i9900 or can I do with just one, by simply
moving it from one slot to the next?

Thanks in advance for your reply,

BCI-6 cartridges do not have a chip. Canon introduced tanks with chips in their PGI-6 and CLI-8 series of cartridges, later replaced with newer series. If refilling, the PGI and CLI can use a resetter to restore ink levels monitoring.

Take care of your 9900, it is an outstanding printer. You can also clean your heads and pads with Windex (with ammonia).
