Does anyone know if the new Canon Pixma MP830 for sale in the U.S. will be able to be modified to print CD's and DVD's? If so, is the CD Tray required the same or different compared to what their printers have used historically?

Thanks.

Your best bet is to try calling Canon in the UK

http://www.photographyblog.com/index...n_pixma_mp530/
(contact numbers on there)

.. and they should at least be able to tell you which CD tray you're going to need.

As to whether they are modifiable or not, it's going to be a case of waiting until someone with the knowledge takes a look and gives it a shot..

According to the Japanese manual, it like the mp800 takes tray type D. I'd love to say I have a clue on the subject, but the fact is I've only seen a couple of references to tray type D, and there were some users who had problems with the older pixma tray, the tray type B.

As for for finding trays, check out knightcrawlers discussion board.

Thank you to both of you for the helpful comments and links. The knightcrawlers discussion board is very nice.

I stopped in at my local Staples and they had an MP830 on display. Sharp looking All-In-One. It has the plastic strip just like the other models that needs to be pried off in order to insert the CD tray. The internal "guts" looked a little different, but I'm not sure about that. The salesman was not knowledgable about CD printing.

I'll bet the MP830 U.S. version prints CD's (silly to spend money on two very different designs and production runs)but will wait for actual conformation from someone who has done it.

I'm not surprised the salesman didn't know anything about it. For one it's not a widely known feature even on the older pixmas. Also the printer is too dang new. It took a month or two for people to figure out the mp750/760/780 line, and that's with people activly working on it with units they owned.

You might consider a mp780. It's at the very least confermed to work with the trays sold on e-bay, the tray type b that is. $100 less to boot. Not as cool as the mp830 in terms of photo printing.

I'll bet it is the same as the MP800. I ordered a "D" tray and I am ready to try it when the tray gets here.

1. Order CD/DVD Tray "D" - Done got it on EBAY

2. Downloaded the print software - Done

I got the CD/DVD print soft at http://knightcrawler.filefront.com/

3. Change printer fron US to EUR- Done

4. Reinstall driver under EUR - Done

I uninstalled the printer in Windoze and reinstalled itafter a reboot. I also unplugged the USB cord. After Windoze rebooted, I plugged the USB back in and Windoze picked up the printer again. I then open up a page to print. Under the options for the printer is "printable disk." When chosen, the tray is also changed to the cd/dvd tray cassette. I am now waiting for the "D" tray from EBAY and I think I'm set.

The MP830 print option lists the correct cassette as "Tray D" in the print options.

So, "D" it is!

Excellent news Lineman!

Just curious, why did you uninstall and reinstall the printer? Also, the directions for enabling CD printing with the MP500 work exactly the same for the MP830?

Thanks.

I uninstalled and installed the printer per the instructions. Apparently the Windoze driver must see the EUR mode of the printer at driver install to add the "print CD-R" to the list of available choices.

I followed the instructions form Knightcrawlers board for the 5 easy steps http://pixma.web1000.com/MP500/index.htmexactly for the MP500/MP800 and the printer was changed from US to EUR mode. I have the printouts here. Would it be OK to scan them and post?

Knightcrawler emailed me and is going to include the printer in the list on the next update to his/her site. I have *not* printed a CD/DVD yet as I do not have the tray "D." I received an email from the EBAY seller this morning informing me the tray was shipped from Japan. I will let you know if it was *total* success. So far, everything else went according to the book.
