I've read the modification on adding a small ink receiving tank so the pads don't fill up but my R300's pads are or probably are full because of the pop up warning of parts need replacing and then printer stopped. If I do the modification do the pads still have to be cleaned before doing the modification or is it a waste of time.

After you've redirected the waste ink tube to an outside container, I would think it would be a waste of time to clean the pads. Unless you're anal about the cleanliness of the inside of your printer, just reset the printer, do the mod, and be done with it.
