Default Help-first photo printer- Canon I850 vs. I950

Hi, I'm going to be getting a photo printer for a gift and need some advice. Right now, I've narrowed my decision, I think b/w the Canon i850 vs. i950. My price limit is around $250. I have a Nikon Coolpix 4300 camera and windows 98. My main objective here is great photo quality, ease of use, and borderless pictures. Please feel free to weigh in on this decision. Thanks for your help.

The decision between the i850 and i950 comes down to the following questions:

1 - Are you wanting (A) an all-around printer or a (B) more dedicated photo printer? If the answer is A, then the i850 is better and faster at text than the i950, but both are exceptional photo printers with the i950 being faster in printing photos.

2 - If you answered B to the above question, do you want the better tonal gradiations that 6 colors offer, or are you happy with what 4 colors have to offer? If you answered 6 color, then you can elimiate the i850; its just a 4 color (CMYK) instead of the CMYK, LC, and LM.

The i950 also supports Canon's Photo Paper Plus 5x7 papers native to its drivers. The i850 can print 5x7's but on custom paper sizes which may or may not work.

I am not an expert at this but have purchased the i950 and am amazed at the results. It does acceptable text but I bought it for the photo quality which is absolutely excellent. Good luck, Mike

Have you thought about the S820? It has 6-color ink and does a fantastic job on photos and text for a lot less money. The big difference is it doesn’t have all those buttons, slots, and whistles. Read Steve’s Review

I bought an i850 last december to replace my hp 970cse. a couple months later they came out with the i950. frankly, I think I would have waited for the i950 if i knew it was going to be released. supposedly, you can only really tell the difference if you look at the photos using a magnifying glass. but I would sleep easier at night if I knew that my printer had 6 colors instead of 4 colors. if you are willing to pay an extra $60-$80 to have the better model, which you would only know the difference if you owned both printers, then I say go with the i950.

Is there a real difference between the photo quality between the S820 and the i850 or i950? Does the dpi 2400 x 1200 vs. 4800 x 1200 really make a noticible difference to the naked eye?

You probably won't see any difference in the quality. But you will see a huge difference in the Color quality. Remember the i850 is basically a 3 color machine and the i950 is a 6 color machine.

I am sorry, I need to clarify my posting. It sounds clear to me however it is interesting to read other individuals take on things.

S820 - 6 color - 2400 x 1200 dpi

I950 - 6 color - 4800 x 1200dpi

I850 - 3 color - 4800 x 1200dpi

How does the S820 and the i950 compare besides on price. How is the quality?

Maybe I will return it and get an i950 instead! That may be a better thing to do.

Quality wise the i950 will do better but only to the person who really looks close. But it will look sharper and deeper on certain pictures like Say if you took a picture of a castle where you have many focal points.

s820 will however be able to pull out equal colors at about half the price.
