I think Neat Image is the only competent noise reduction that comes as a plug-in.
slipe, does the NeatImage plugin "play" nicely with PS? What I mean by this is if you have a selection defined in your image, will the plugin only do NR in the selected area?
Neat Image Pro+ is an add-in. It is an excellent product. Reasonably priced. Great customer support from Vlad.

I apply noise reduction on a layer all the time. Generally, I use the mask for my sharpening edge mask. Invert it. This gives a selection of the surfaces. I apply that as a layer mask to keep NI away from the image edges.

Cheers,

Mitch

Thanks for replying, Mitch. I just found this out for myself as I bought the NeatImage Pro version a week or so ago. It plays very nicely with PSCS as a plugin. Great tool!

Thanks for the tip on how to use NI in such a way as to avoid taking the detail away from the edges in an image. I need to try that ASAP as applying NR has always been a balancing act between removing the noise and trying to retain the detail/sharpness.

geoffs Sorry I didn't get back – just ran across the thread again.

Mitch I haven't been doing that. Great approach. You can eliminate more noise if you don't mess with the edges.
