Default B&W Quality?

1) Is anyone using QIP to convert RAW directly to B&W TIFF? Does QIP's quality gain in color translate into a similar gain in B&W?

2) Do I get better B&W results converting directly from RAW to B&W TIFF, rather than converting to color and then de-saturating in Photoshop?

FYI, I am a newbie at this and still haven't opened up the QIP download, since I got my S2 four days ago and just today got my Epson 1280...

Thanks.

You'll get the same quality B/W images if you convert to color and then convert to B/W. Due to the nature of CCD interpolation, you need to convert to color first anyway.

When converting from color to B/W, however, it is best to use a "convert to grayscale" rather than manually desaturating the image. Most quality photo editors use a better technique of converting to B/W than just desaturating the color out of the photo if you use a function like "convert to grayscale".
