I am a new user of Qimage and my .psd photos display correctly except for my B&W "grayscale" photos. They are virtually unlegible. Is some special configuration required for B&W?

Adobe has very lacking third party support for their PSD format. Their public specs for the PSD format are still at PS 5.0. In the options for file formats, you can set PS to "maximize reverse compatibility". That often helps, but there are still some forms of PSD that are not supported in the public domain, so if you have trouble, just resave as a TIFF file which is a standard format as opposed to the Adobe proprietary PSD format.
