I have long dreamed of saving my remote's signals into my desktop computer. Is this easily possible?

I have bought recently an IR 'dongle' which is used to
send data between my palm and desktop via the usb port.
They make the same thing under $10 for serial port also.

I would like to save my Olympus remote commands as well
as other hard to find remotes (like the one for my XM radio) into my computer so that I can have the commands
in case I lose the remote OR if I want to automate some
function I could do that with a macro.

What's available for me to do this?

While I was writing I ended up searching a bit and found some sites that maybe are close to what I want to do but none are so very simple. They involve using chips and hardware circuits and firmware. Not what I had in mind since I have the PDA receiver/transmitter and a computer.

well hope I've been clear and it seems like a project that many people would want. Saving your remote signals to disk makes sense to me for a lot of reasons.
