Default C9A Video Conversion Before Editing Question

New to the forum and video editing in general.

Here is my situation:

I have a new Sanyo VPC-CA9 and I have been filming in 720p @ 30fps. I want to edit the video with Adobe Premiere Elements 8. The problem is the process is a little slow, and from what I can tell it's the AVCHD format that is giving me problems.

I think what I need to do is first convert me clips to another format (mpeg2?). Then import them into PE for editing.

Does that sound like the right approach ?

Can anyone one recommend a way to convert the clips while maintaining the quality ?

Thanks for the help.
