Default Sanyo VPC-X1400: Terrible image quality

I just bought a new Sanyo VPC-X1400 and I'm really dissapointed with the picture quality. So much so, that I though I must have had a defective camera to take such blurry/pixelated images. I returned it to the store to exchange it for a new one, and it really is just the camera.
I've tried all the settings in different light conditions, with flash and without, and even can't get a crisp image on a tripod. The main reason I bought it to have large 12MP images for print, but the images are terrible. It looks like the camera takes the picture and 640 x 480 then blows it up to 12 MP and puts a filter on all the pixels just to say, there you go, a 12 MP file.
Am I completely missing something? Does anyone else have this camera and know the right combination of settings to actually get a crisp 12 MP photo? I'm getting pretty frustrated with it.
