I have some .mp4 video files shot with my Sanyo C6. While XP will show thumbnails of all my other video files in Explorer, it will not display them for mp4 files. Does anyone knwo how to fix that?

Just add this key to the windows registry using regedit

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.mp4ShellEx{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
@="{c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}"

Japanxo

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.mp4ShellEx{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
@="{c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}"

Thanks for that tip but could you explain a bit more about addingthis registry value, I can find - HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.mp4ShellEx - ok

but I am not sure how to ender the rest? - - ->

{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}
@="{c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}

Thanks

Goto
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
.mp4
ShellEx

Create a Key in there named {BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}
with a date value of {c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}

So then you have :
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
.mp4
ShellEx
{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}

and inside here ^^^^^^^^^
you have a new string value that looks like:

(Default) Reg_SZ {c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}

Thanks for this info I've been seeking for the past 18 months! Who makes up this stuff?? Now I have lovely thumbnail images for MP4 files in the default folder that my camera software downloads to. However, as soon as I rename the files (new name.MP4) or move the files to a different folder, the thumbnail image disappears and I'm back to wherewe started. Any idea why this happens?

You are setting eachfolder to "thumbnail" view on each of the folders you move your mp4s too?

Yes, the folders are all set to Thumbnail view. I can see all the JPG file thumbnails, but any MP4 files that have been renamed or moved show only as as "default MP4 graphical icon". The file type of all the MP4 files remains .MP4. I found if I rename an MP4 file, the thumbnail is replaced by the default icon, but then if I name it back to the original name, the thumbnail displays again. For example, file is M4V03113.MP4 as downloaded from my camera, and I see the thumbnail. I rename it to pooltime.MP4, the thumbnail disappears. I name it back to M4V03113.MP4, and the thumbnail reappears. However, if I now copy this file M4V03113.MP4 to a different folder, the thumbnail disappears again. Thanks for any insights!

ShellEx key not present, so I added it, once I compared .mp4 with the .mpg keys. The thing works! Seems my video directory window freezes about every other time while creating -- I'll say -- 20 or more `thumbs, then I open Task Manager to shut them. I can reopen them and `thumbs creation resumes.
Google's Picassa used to be my MP4 thumbnail viewer, a bit large for this purpose, so thanks for this. My first dip into the registry!

I am having a similar problem to pinksned. On my laptop the icons work beautifully but on my Desktop PC they don't work at all ie I just get the default icon or whatever icon may be associated with them at the time. I tried disassociating Quicktime and VLC media player to see if they were interfering but no success. I even deleted the .mp4 registry key to see if recreating it would solve it, but again no success. There is obviously something interfering with this on this PC. Is there anything else I can check? Hopefully it's a case of not seeing the woods for the trees but I doubt it as I have already checked everything several times over already. Any help appreciated as to why it works on my Laptop and not my Desktop!
