I've always been an available light photographer. I want to get a bright standard lens for my 5D, and really like the idea of the 30mm F1.4 (if I could find one), but for $100 less I could probably be happy with the 28mm F1.8 too.

Anyone have any thoughts?

28mm f/1.8?

I'll assume that you mean the Sigma (that's the only 28mm f/1.8 in Maxxum mount that I'm aware of).

You an find a couple of user reviews of it here:

Unless one of the reviewers got a bad copy, it sounds like it might be a bit soft wide open and slow to focus. Looking at it's MTF Chart, center sharpness appears to be pretty good from it. But, corner sharpness appears to leave a lot to be desired at wider apertures if that's important to you (keep in mind that you only care about around 12mm from center with an APS-C sensor though).
