The Tamron 70-300mm LD di has longer reach and a 6 year warranty. It is a better deal costing just a little more.

My two cents. You really need to consider asking your lady if she is prepared to change lenses in mid stride potentially losing shots. For most casual shooters, the logical upgrade from the kit lens is an inexpensive zoom such as the Tamron 18-200, that despite the chorus of boos from those willing to change lenses, is a very capable all around lens. It can be had for around $200.
