I will be getting my Dynax5D in Jessops at the beginning of December. I will have another £150 for a zoom lens, which I will also get there. Choices are:-
SIGMA 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG MACRO (MINOLTA AF)

KONICA MINOLTA AF 70-210mm f4.5/5.6 If I can find a black one

What would be your recommendations please?

Bestest wishes

The "standard" recommandation for Zoom are going to be the following(from my lurking in various forum and experience with one):

Minolta AF 70-210 f/4 - used(metal barrel, heavy, cheap, very good pic, this is what I went with)

Minolta AF 70-210 f/3.5-4.5 - used(more compact, newer version of the above, apparently just as good, and much lighter, maybe cheaper still)

Minolta AF 100-300 f/4.5-5.6 APO -used/new (longer reach, APO lens, I've heard it has better color and sharpness even at 300mm compare to the above, more expensive but still a bargain for what it is. Available with "D" version)

For costlier options:

Minolta AF 80-200mm f/2.8 APO G(used for ~$800-1000 on eBay)

Minolta AF 70-200mm f/2.8 APO G SSM(you can't even get this now even if you have the $1800 for one....high demend, low supply)

I'mgoing towait until the KM 18-200 zoom is out, probably later this month. I believe I saw that it will be manufacturered by Tamron. I know this is a budget lens, but from all the writeups I've seen on the Tamron 18-200 for other cameras this one should be a winner. If it's not then I'll wait until Sigma comes out with their version of the 18-200 for the KM.It's gotten marginally better reviews than even the Tamron. Ibelievethis size of a zoom lens will make a very goodwalkaround lens for my 5D.It's small, light, and has a wide focal range. And it looks like it will be fast enough. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with my 18-70 kit lens when I do get the bigger zoom. And down the road I want to add a KM 500mm Reflex AF lens for reaching out. I'm not a pro so I don't expect to own $3000 worth of glass.

KEH has a Minolta 100-300 APO right now for $235 in Excellent condition. Great company with nice used lenses. They also have a Sigma 70-210 F2.8 for $275 another nice lens though heavy. The Minolta 70-210 F4 is good lens and is getting harder to find. The Minolta 100-200 F4.5 is not that well thought of and is limited but if you want one KEH has two in excellent shape for $47 each not $165. That $165 price is a rip off. Good luck.
