For anyone following this forum will have noticed that I am looking for more range for wildlife and sports (over my Sigma 70-200 mm f2.8 and have just found a older Sigma 300mm f2.8 AF APO in the free ads but the owner is not sure if it will work on a 5D as he has only ever used it on his Dynax 9 and is to far away to check it out. Does anyone know the answer to this? This will make a good 600mm f5.6 (900mm allowing for the crop) using my 2x telecon.

I have tried 1989 and 1995 vintage Sigma lenses on my 5D and they functioned fine. One is a 28-70 and the other a 50mm macro. I had just sold a 75-300 and a 70-210 before I got the 5D. The 75-300 didn't like my 800Si, so it might not have worked (it was a 1985-86 vintage) but I suspect the 70-210 would have worked. From what I hear, it is a crap shoot on the Sigmas.

The chances are very good that it will work. There were problems with the 300mm/f4 and they are providing a chip upgrade. At www.dyxum.com I could only find a Sigma 300mm/2.8 EX lense. Has your lense also "EX" in the name. They don't let you down with these premium lenses. However, to go sure I would ask their service about compatibility problems.
