IMO, Nikon and Canon build some nice cameras but their entry level ones disappoint my hands a bit. It's more ofa preference thing and I understand that other people may have opinions that differ from mine.

If I was looking Nikon, I'd go with a d200, Canon a 5d. They're both fine bodies with a plethora of world class glass available. The one nice thing about buying a Nikon or Canon is that you can always trade up in bodies if you want to. The one drawback to buying a KM right now is that you may be buying the best camera that will ever be produced in this lens mount. I expect Sony to step up, but I can't warrant that they will.

If you found the 5d a bit plasticky (a word in my vocabulary) try out the 7d. At current prices it's a steal and you may find you like the feel.

Many new lenses freak me out also, they have a scratchiness (or light grinding feel) when zooming- no lens should feel like that.

There are a few hardcore fans of one brand or another, and I'll poke fun at the other brands at times. Very few true jerks show up to flame in here. Perhaps we're too boring for them. :blah:
