Have a DSC-F717 purchased in Japan. It was given to me by a friend. It had little relative use to date & mostly laid stored away. I began charging the camera to use it to take photos of a local parade & celebration and when I turned it on lo & behold there was the classical CCD failure signature displayed on the LCD.

I think that the issue is that these plastic encapsulated CCD chips will eventually go bad with time (ie, even if they are not used), but that using them can accelerate their failure.
