My DSC - S40 Sony Camera gives me the message "turn the power off and on again" when I turn it on. The only thing I can do with the camera is look at and retrieve existing photos still on the camera.

I have seen other messages on other boards that mention this problem, but none of the solutions work for me.

Any suggestions?

The two things that could possibly be causing the error message you are experiencing are: 1) the lens is kind of stuck and is not expending/retracting when the camera is turned on or 2) the lens cover is stuck when the camera is turned on. To fix #1, you might gently tap the camera around the lens as you turn it on (you might even try to help the camera by pulling the lens out in case it's stuck. If #2 appears to be the cause, then as you turn the camera on, use you fingers to move the lens protectionblades open. These suggestions, of course, are assumingthat you did not take you camera to the beach and dropped it in the sand face down. Hope it works.
