I've never used a v1, so I can't speak for its performance, but I can answer your question about slow sync flash.

Slow sync flash allows you to capture a subject at night against a dimly lit background (like a night skyline or lit building). Normally (regular flash mode) when you takeflash photo at night, your subject is lit well, but the background is totally black. Slow sync flash mode first opens the shutter, leaves it open for a relatively long time, THEN fires the flash to illuminate the foreground (i.e. your subject). The result is a properly exposed, dim background (from the long exposure), AND a properly exposed foreground (from the flash). The downside is because the shutter speed is so slow, you have to usea tripod (or some other support for the cam), otherwise you'll havea seriously blurry photo from camera shake.
