OK, I just bought a Sony F717 on closeout at Sears. I love my new camera and I want to keep it looking nice and new, so...

Do I need an LCD screen protector? Where can I find them? (I use the LCD instead of the EVF 99.99% of the time)

What about cases? Suggestions? I know Sonystyle.com has a few fitted cases, has anyone used them? Are they worth $40-50? I need something small enough to fit into a small backpack with the rest of my stuff (discman, CDs, notebook, etc) but sturdy enough to be used on it's own as well.

Has anyone used Sony's neck strap? It looks cool, but is it worth $30 + shipping?

I've heard people talk about having a filter to protect my lens. Is the lens cap not enough? What is that about?

Sorry for so many questions...this is my first real camera! Any help/advice is greatly appreciated.

Great camera, I love mine. I use the LCS-FX sony case. I use the shoulder strap on the case but not on the camera, I got a V1 wrist strap for the camera and it fits in the case perfectly with an extra battery and memory stick. The lens protection filter is nothing more than a piece of glass that screws on at the end of the lens...

I own an F828. I have the LCS-FHA soft textile case. In my opinion, the soft textile case offers better cushioning than the leather cases and has room for a few small accessories. You can get an LCD screen protector kit from Radio Shack for $5.99. A UV filter will help prevent dirt and dust from getting into the zoom lens mechanism when the dust cap is off. The UV filter can be left on all the time.

Great choice on the F717 PK. The sony bags and straps etc are overprices IMHO.

Check out Lowepro for bags etc. Excellent quality bags.

My F717 has seen about 9000 frames in the year that i've had it and I dont have a single scratch on it. It not that I am extra carefull, believe me I dropped it from my desk yesterday and I smacked into a tree once while shooting BMX photos. These cams are very durable.

As for LCD protectors. I wouldn't advise it. They tend to take away from the quality of the screen and can cause horrible reflections in sunlight that renders the screen useless when you are outdoors.

I would highly recommend that you get a 58mm UV filter to protect the lens. $10 is a very small price to pay for protecting the $500 lens.

Shout if you have more q's

:|The filter will only protect the front surface of the lens, not the internal workings of it. Dirt and dust will still get into the zoom and focusings mechansim.

Thanks everyone!

I checked out the lowepro backpacks. They look great, and I've heard lots of good things about them, but unfortunately they're slightly beyond my price range at the moment.

What do I need to know to buy a filter? Is there any special kind or brand? Does it affect the camera's response time or picture quality? Does it stay on all the time or do I need to take it off when I'm done? Would it replace the lens cap, or would I need that as well?

So many questions!
