i am looking for a new camera to buy since i've just sold my canon s50. i am a very big fan of canon but lately i have been reading some very bad reviews about the new canon powershots ( canon sd400, sd500, s500) on how theLCD cracks, error msgs, noisy when you take pictures, etc. i want to purchase a camera that is more than 5 mega-pixel and will last me a long time. more than a few months.

My first digital camera (a Mavica FD-7) was purchased in 1998-99 and is still in use. Most digital cameras have a useful life that is much longer than a few months BUT the pace at which technology continues to progress means that the 'technological lifespan' of the camera is much shorter than the physical lifespan.

Theres no one specific model that pops into my mind (and I deal with 100+ defective cameras per week) but here are some things I think should be AVOIDED:

1- "Slidy doors" to turn on and off.
Havent seen many problems with Canon S but still a pet peve of mine
Olympus C-50 - AWFUL slidy door!
SonyDSC-T1 - yes, the door switch can break and its not fun to replace!!
I think its just poor design using this type door personally

2- Unprotected LCD screen
Put the camera in your pocket with your keys, and the screen is toast!
Sony DSC-T1 - Everybody breaks their LCD with this one!

3- Built in memory
Sure its handy, but if it goes bad and your out of your warranty, the camera is shot

Im sure there are other things I could think of...
