First time out with the Sigma 120-300 & 40d. Handheld

As the sun went down, had very hard time getting the shutter speed. All were shot in AV mode from Iso 800 to 3200. Two notes on the 120-300 it is HEAVY ( braced off my left knee) and it is very fast to focus, much faster than the 70-200.

thanks

btrips

It looks like you had a lot more success with the beautiful 120-300 which is great news. In my book it is a lens that is worth every penny.

Number two is a great shot, just think you need to apply a little unsharp mask and you are there.

Number three.... fantastic timing and just a shame the shutter speed was not quite there (I hate bad light) but does not take too much away!!

Looking forward to your next outing.... oh I would get a monopod

I'll make it unanimous. #2 is a keeper !!! and #3 is awfully close. The shot was well chosen and framed, but the focus is just a little off. I think #4 could have been an excellent shot had the pass rusher had his head and his hands up.

Good work and keep 'em coming.

Hi, godda agree with everyone # 2 is the pick, would have been #3 but as Mark points out slow shutter spoils it:sad:. I must say though that #1 keeps drawing me back!!, i like the composition and the boys expression, maybe with a little levels work p&p could give a very nice pic??. p.s still envious of the lenslol, Kind regards Graham.

Thanks Mark,

I did not get there as early as I wanted to get some full sun shots. First time with the 40D and the 120-300, not to mention the first time I have ever shot in the evening/night. Overall I am pleased, even the 3200iso pics turned out better than I thought.

I do have a monopod. Tried it a couple of times did not really like the restricted movement. Will high shutter speeds offset handshake?

Also if you don't mind, do you have any other tips for shooting under the lights?

Thanks

btrips
