Ah, well I would say with good focusing at 2.8 it is very strong, and although I often close down to f3.2 for a little more dof and sharpness I'm very happy with the results.

Here are3 100% crops of the same shot, straight from the camera at f2.8 and 300mm so you can see that even without sharpening we are looking pretty good and with USM they are great. The 3rd shows how narrow the dof is with these settings.

Oops, sorry about that. I'm very happy with mine and have recently used it with a 2x TC which when stopped down a little has been very good for shooting birds (feathered variety).

Here is 100% crop of one of those just to 'help' you out even more. Again straight from camera with no usm or anything else done.

In case you can't see the exif this is 600mm, 1/1000th, f10, ISO 400...... oh and handheld too btw :-)

Hi Mark,

You've caught some LOVELY action there my friend! All of them show determination in the players' faces!! Great timing.

Looking through these, I found myself preferring photos 2, 5 & 6. When I look back I realise it is because these photos had the full body (no limbs / parts cropped off). Do you intentionally crop limbs, etc, sometimes to get closer to the action? (or does that happen as part of the "beast" of hockey / field sports photography?)

Paul

Sorry I missed these. This is some fantastic work Mark. Looks like the microadjustment has really helped the sharpness. I still cant get into the sport itself, but this is definitely some of the best technically I've seen from your hockey galleries. The action is always there but now the sharpness has caught up to your eye!

Good work my friend!

Hey Paul.... how are things with you?? Nope the amputation of limbs, or parts of are not intentional, but sometimes when trying to keep the shot tight they get removed. Glad you like them.

John, the mkIII has really helped increase the keeper rate with the majority of shots that hit the cutting floor being down to my mistakes rather than then the camera so that's good news. Did you spot the thread about gymnastics as you might have some insights?!?!

Thanks
