I am still debating on what combination to purchase for high school baseball games?

Canon EF 200mm f/2.8L II USM and 70-300 is usm. OR

EF 300mm f/4L IS USM for both day and night with iso 3200 or 1600?

Any thoughts?

Can I add a TC to the 200mm f2.8 and use it for the day also?

I understand, and greatfull for the heads up. Im just weighing the odds. Shooting from the baselines outside the fence is all the school will allow.

Will I loose AF speed with a TC?

You don't lose any noticeable AF speed or accuracy with a 1.4 TC. Everything John said is true, and I doubt very much you'll be happy with only 280mm focal length (having to crop so much). In good day time, I use the 400 5.6. When evening comes, I have no choice but pull out the heavy Sigma 120-300 2.8. Everything is a compromise.

I tried to use a 300 f4 for a night time outdoor hockey match .

heres some sharing with a 300 f4 nikon lens[Non vr]

i think i am totaly fail to use a 304 for night time

so i guest a 200 f2.8 or a 70-200 f2.8 will work better [would be more perfect if come with IS]:-)
