Would like some advise how to improve shots. I know the ball is missing in the first one, more interested in the quality of the shots.

Nice shots, for forum members to help you out they would probably need to know what youre shooting with.

Good sharpness and color. Looks like you have decent lighting where you are shooting, so that's a big help.

#1. You said it, without the ball and with her arm cut off, it's not a very interesting shot. If you have the ability, increase your aperture (lower f#) to make the subject stand out even more and minimize distracting backgrounds. The ability to accomplish this would depend on the length of the lens your are using, of course..

#2. Good shot - good timing. I'd try to frame a bit tighter to remove the libero from the left side of the shot to reduce the distraction (since you are already cutting off her leg) - like this:

Thanks for the advise, the shots were taken with a Canon 20D and a Sigma 70-200 2.8.

The setting were 1600 iso, at 2.8
