Default Photos I took during a Prior Life

In the Fall of '72, I was stationed aboard the USS Bryce Canon (AD-36) when she was moored in the harbor of Kaohsiung, Taiwan. We were servicing other ships of the US Navy, and were running out of supplies ourselves. The USS San Jose (AFS-7), a Refrigerated Stores Ship arrived in port and started replenishing the US Navy ships in port with her CH-46 Sea Knight helicopters (a technique known as VERTREP).

This is a sequence of shots I took with my Minolta SRT-101 from the bow of my ship as a helicopter delivered supplies to the flight deck of the USS Monticello (LSD-35), which was moored off our bow, and then picked up another load to take back.

I stumbled upon these prints a little while ago, and decided that I should do something to preserve these images before they get any worse.

These are some very cool shots! What memories they must invoke.

It was a very cool operation. People all around the harbor were watching with their mouths hanging open.

Congrats on the posts, and I can only say that those pics made me want to start scanning my old military shots, before they yellow away to oblivion. Thanks for posting those...

I remember that was the first time I quit smoking. We were out of American cigarettes, and the Taiwanese cigarettes were just plain nasty.
