Default Getting Close

I am posting these indoor volleyball shots just to show samples of what I am getting from the sidelines using my Sony A-700 with a Minolta 50mm f1/8 lens.
As you can see they are all soft. Could only achieve 1/250 shutter at ISO 800

I am considering the Zeiss 85mm f1/4 for future use for this sport.

Any comments?

85 will allow for better focus but you'll still need to up the ISO. I wouldn't recommend shooting at f1.4 as the dof will be too shallow. Raise the ISO to 1600.
Now, the one unknown (for me anyway) is the focus performance of the lens you're considering. It's sharp and bright but I don't know how quickly it focuses. And, in volleyball that's very critical.

Hi John, thanks for the quick response.

Before I buy that lens (it ain't cheap) I will rent it when the season starts again and then if I like the results, I will purchase.

Thanks very much for the input.
