Default USED Nikon 80-200mm f2.8 or NEW Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 II ???

I am looking at spending roughly $800 for a new fast lens for my D90 to shoot indoor volleyball. I already own the fixed 85mm f1.8 and love it but would like to supplement that with something with range. Does anyone have any feedback as to which of the above they would suggest? .....Ebay for the used Nikkor or get a new Sigma? (i'm also intrigued by the Sigma 50-150mm as that range suits me even better) Thanks, David

if the range of the 50-150 2.8 suits you better, then it would be an excellent choice. it has a nice fast motor, good optics and is a bit smaller than the 70-200 yet performs very similarly opticswise.

I'm concerned about some of the reviews about the sigma lens. I obviously need fast and sharp for indoor sports. Some have said soft focus problems. Can anyone with these lens give me some feedback. Are you happy with them?

I'd make sure to get the newest II version if you look at the Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8. They did have some issues with earlier production runs (sometimes requiring a trip back to Sigma for rechipping). But, they seem to have worked out those issues with newer lenses.

The 70/80-200 2.8 lenses can be a little hefty for hand-holding; I have a Sigma 70-200 2.8 that I use, but prop against a knee or wall to steady. I recently acquired a nikkor 85 1.8 but the season is over for volleyball where I am. If I were to get another lens for volleyball, it would be the newest version of the Sigma 50-150; it has decent range for the sport without being too unwieldy IMO.

That's kind of what I was thinking too. The 50-150mm is the perfect range for club and school volleyball when you can get around the court fairly easily. Thanks for the reply. I think I'll give that lens a try.

I am in the same boat. I love my 85mm but the focus range keeps me a bit limited. Alot of people were suggesting to me to get a Nikon 135mm f2 fixed (for volleyball). But I did not want to spend that kind of cash on another fixed right now. I need a nice 2.8 zoom for multiple use. I just ordered the Nikon 70-200 VRII and still a bit in shock I spent that kind of money. I hope it replaces a few of my lenses.... well at least my arms might get a bit stronger. Good Luck and let us know how the 50-150 works. It sounds like it will be perfect for Vball.
Looking forward to January with Junior Olympic volleyball starts up so I can try out the new lens.

just received the 50-150mm from B&H. Haven't had any time to work with it much yet. But B&H has a nice return policy right now extending it through January since they know a lot of items will be gifts. That will give me time to shoot some Vball in January when the tournaments start. i'll post some pics then for review. Thanks all.

The 50-150 sounds like a good lens for gymnastics also. I get some nice shots with my 85 1.8 but miss the zoom. I have a Sigma 28-70 2.8 if I'm close enough to the action that works nice as well.
