Default Paddleboarding

The US Open of Surfing finished up here in Huntington Beach yesterday, leaving the waves once again to the locals. We're seeing an increasing number of guys on paddleboards, although they appear to be a nuisance to the other surfers. Temperature today: 75 degrees. Surf was about 3-4 ft.

As I skier most of my life, I remember 30 years ago when those pesky snowboarders appeared on our ski hills for the first time. We didn’t want them there either. After trying snowboarding 6 month later, I was hooked. It’s no surprise that it became an Olympic Sport in 1998. Watch what happens with Stand up Paddle Boarding!

The big incentive is still traditional surfing. At the US Open this past week, the winner (a local guy) took home $100,000. The winning female got the biggest woman's purse ever...$50,000. Until paddle boarding has pros and big purses I don't see them growing too much. Of course, we don't use them out here as bikini fashion runways -- which could account for the popularity back there :-)
