#1 is the best in my opinion. I'm guess it's yours too, seeing as you uploaded that one first.
I do believe it is because of the angle of the camera that is most pleasing to me. With your subject looking down at the camera.

I agree number 1 works the best. Looking at the light in the 2nd you can see that it is largely missing the target and lighting the grass. As you are using off camera rather than having the flash on it's default wide setting you can zoom the head so you focus the light more, then aim more at the head. This will help with the white trousers too as they won't be so bright.

Forgot to say, watch for multiple intersections, you have the hand, flag and tree intersecting at the same point looking a bit strange.

In that case you need to get the lighting a lot closer to your subject as it's not directional enough and is going to give you the problem you see here. With an umbrella of this size consider being a lot closer than you are due to the light spill. For what you want I would consider a more focused light so the head gets the majority then some spill off for the rest.

We got out of dinner a tad late, im aiming at doing the shoot at 5:30-6ish, these were shot at around 7-7:30, so it will be brighter outside for the actual shoot.
