Sure do. First, you can get flare from light sources other than sun. And, of course, the hood protects the front lens element.

Personal preference then. I would rather not stretch my cord all the way out. I went and bought a longer one that was also cheaper. I save the canon for when I use a flash arm on none sports photos.
