Default question for john g regarding.......

tele-converters- if i were to put the 1.4x on my 70 200mm i know i would lose a full stop from 2.8 to 4- how would the image look at 300 at f4-would there be image loss?-just wondering because im thinking of picking one up to give me that reach to 3rd base at my boys baseball games this spring/summer- 200 is just not long enough- thanks-johnny

Hi Hawksfan,

No I am not John nor nearly as talented as him but if you want to see a few examples of the 70-200 with 1.4x tc on a 50D I can share this gallery.

I know that at least the first 20 where with the 1.4x but the last couple it was getting dark and I took it off. You can see the EXIF data for the shots.

I use it a lot for soccer shots and have found the small loss in IQ well worth the extra reach. For me it was a nice investment but it will only go to 280mm (not quite 300).

Andy's advice is good - assuming we're talking about the Canon 70-200 2.8 and canon TC. If it's a different 70-200 2.8 (tamron or sigma) and different TC then there are different optics involved so the IQ loss might be greater. How great? Can't say.
