Mark, do you know the model number of your Velbon (RUP-40, RUP-43)? I just saw the RUP-40 on Amazon for about $28...great price.

Sorry to say I don't know, it's in the car and I'm off to bed soon. If I remember I will check tomorrow, it does look like an older version of the RUP-40 though.

Yes, the manfrotto 679b is a great choice. $44 at B&H. Plenty of support up to a 300mm 2.8 lens.

I ordered the Velbon RUP-40 from Amazon for $27.95. It had good user reviews and comes with a five year warranty. Thanks, everyone for the advice.
