Default Elephant Polo

Competition at the annual King's Cup International Elephant Polo tournament. Best part about watching was seeing something I'd heard many years ago, which is the elephants know it's both a game and a competition, and they want to win. When a ball is whacked clear, for example, the elephant closest to the ball knows to turn and chase it without being directed. His mahout (driver) then ask for more speed if necessary.

Each team's tent was provided with a small polo field and elephant carvings so they could work out plays and positioning.

Less experienced players may have trouble judging the appropriate length mallet for the Jumbo they're riding. A friend stands by with alternate lengths.

Whack the ball, chase the ball.

Tournament was held on an army base. Soldier in the foreground uses the flags to signal a goal.

Reproductions of weapons used when elephants carried soldiers.

Just when you think you've seen everything.
