Overcast day, so the backgrounds suck. But it was the first weekend for high school baseball in our area:

John,

Nice pictures! As a newbie I'm very interested in what lens and settings you used to take those shots?

Thanks Aaron.

I use a Canon 20D camera and a Sigma 120-300mm 2.8 lens. I shoot aperture priority - typically with an aperture of around 3.2 because I still get sufficient background blur at that aperture. For baseball, I prefer shutter speeds around 1/1000 or so. So, I will adjust ISO as necessary. This game was shot at ISO 400 & 800 (depending on lighting). As for focus, I use AI-Servo focus and either center-point only or all-points depending on the circumstance.

A less expensive alternative to the lens I use is something in the neighborhood of a 70-200 (or 80-200) 2.8. 200mm on a crop body (by that I mean a DSLR with a crop factor vs. one without) is a little short for baseball. For softball 20mm on my 1.6x crop camera is barely OK to get cross-field shots. So, I would recommend starting with a 70-200 2.8 lens and a 1.4x TC.

There are, of course, less expensive 70-300 lenses but I'm not a big fan of shooting sports like this at apertures of 5.6 or narrow. There is just too much clutter in the background. But, that's just my opinion. I really think something like a 70-200 2.8 + 1.4x TC is the absolute best sporting combo to get started. A sigma 70-200 2.8 and 1.4x TC should be around $850-$900.
