Given the over-exposed "program" images (and correctly exposed "Auto" ), I'm wondering if you had a bit of "+" exposure comp' dialed in by mistake...? I certainly had no such problems with a V1...
The gripe for me on the V1 (and J1) and this J3 is the dumb mode dial.... why not put PASM here, as opposed to the long winded menu system... there's still enough room for an "auto" also...!!
Perhaps the V2 will suffer the same "price drop" fate as the V1... and I can have my PASM dial...!
With regards image noise, the J/V's seem to favor low NR- though interestingly,I found the increases in selectable iso resulted in fairly small incremental gains in noise and in good light iso 1600 is generally acceptable for the class of camera.

He never said manual AF was faster than Auto. He simply stated that using manual focus will reduce the "shutter lag", due to the fact that you are not having to wait for the camera to autofocus.
