Default Sunset

Hi All,

I want to take some photos of people with the sunsetting. A friend house over looking the beach and you can see the sunset. i'm using a SONY a900 with either a 24-70f/2.8CZ or a 16-50f/2.8CZ. What is the best way to make sure that people are well lit and the sunset is in the back. If I use a flash, I'm afraid that it will wash out the sun, if i dont then i might not get ppls face.

Thank you.

It isn't the flash that will cause the sun to be washed out, it is your exposure setting. When using flash, the shutter speed needs to be equal or below the flash sync speed. With a strong backlight, such as the sky, you may need to set a small aperture, such as f/16, in order to keep the sky from washing out. This will likely require a powerful flash.
Another solution may be to take bracketed exposures, and combine them with HDR software.

Washing out the sun has not been done with the heaviest laser beams that any army anywhere has been able to do - don't worry about doing it with your camera's flash :-)

brian has it right. Figure out what the flash can do at the highest sync speed and work from there.
