Years ago, I got the elastic that goes around the lens and holds the cap. But I hated that.

So I got a nice pieces of black cord, attached it to the camera, where the strap goes, sewed a pieces of velcro at the end of the cord. Then just put a small piece of velcro on all my len caps, it works great! Now I have 3 cameras I just put a cord on each camera. Very simple, when shooting it hangs down out of the way. The cord is 8" long so it will fit my longest tele lens.

May be it's not a good idea to have cords, strings ... attached to the camera, disaster can happen:

Never broken a camera or lens because of the string attachment, but do have several shots with a blurry string and/or black blur of a lens cap.

Extra lens caps are good to have at hand. An extra back lens cap as well. A body plug is sometimes handy, but with the extra dust issues with DSLRs that might not be a real good idea to use very much.

I had a cord attached to my cap, until it jamed between the lens and camara body when the lens retracked. with very gentle pulling I got it out I cut off the cord. In the pocket from now on.
