What is the optimum way to save a photo for posting on this site? I have both Photoshop and Fireworks 8.

You don't need high resolution for web posts. Usually 72pixels/inch is enough. Since this site has size limitation, I would suggest you use another site to host the image and link it to here. Try ImageShack or Photobucket, they're both free.

Or, if you don't need to display a really big image, check out the posting guidelines for this site, resize accordingly and post directly.
