Default Backups .......

I was curious how you guys backup all the GB's off pictures.
I've been shooting for about 6 months now but allready it has gone up to almost 6GB on my HDD.

I thought about DVD-R/W or CD-R but the problem is that even DVD-R/W is not big enough after a year or so, also because I organize my pictures in folders and subfolders it's a pain to track which pictures are new and which are old (except offcourse if you sort on date).

My solution is the following.
I use an external USB2.0 Maxtor 120GB HDD. Once A week I delete everything on it and copy the whole photo HDD from my PC to the Maxtor. The maxtor after that is stored somewhere else. An extra HDD in the PC would have been to great a risk.

Total costs are lower than a DVD-Burner (slightly) and the speed is fast enough.

I'm curious how you do it ?

I use external HDDs too, but through removeable IDE racks from the front of the PC... I've given up on optical media since it's too slow to random access/find!

I haven't had my camera for too long and I only have about 500mb of images. Since I have 2 cd burners, I'll be burning them to CDR

Though depending on the type of camera you have I could see why you would want a DVD burner or an external harddrive to do your backups.

I go for the ultimate (sort of) security in backing up photos, by burning four CD-R's of everything, and keeping two in different locations in my house, and mailing on CD to my parents to look after, and one to my brother. That way even if two of our houses burn down simultaneously I still have a back up somewhere

I copy my pictures to a second hard drive and then immediately burn them onto a CD before doing any editing. That way, if I screw up a picture in the editing process, I always have the original on CD.
