Default My Friend Charlie

My friend, Charlie, pilots C-130s for the KY ANG. This weekend a few of us were privileged and honored to have him has our host and guide as he took us out on the flightline. For those of you that don't live in Louisville, this weekend is Thunder Over Louisville. It is an airshow and the nation's largest pyrotechnic display. It is a prelude to the Kentucky Derby. Charlie got us onto the flightline and guided us through the different aircraft. It was incredible. We got a chance to see some of our nations hottest aircraft like the B-1 bomber and to go inside and TAKE PHOTOS of a USAF AWACS!! How cool is that?! These are just to whet your appetite. The rest can be seen in this slideshow. http://tinyurl.com/yynstsh I took both cameras with me and used both equally.

It's folks like Charlie that make me proud to be an American.

AWACS Cockpit

Inside the AWACS. That's Charlie on the right.

You are one lucky man!!! In photo 63, that's one view of an A-10 you really don't want if you are not on good terms with the pilot

Some great aircraft to see and touch..... sweet!

I was talking to a fellow photographer at the airport earlier today and he was planning on heading to Thunder over L'ville. I'd love to go, but am not too keen on the crowds. You are lucky to have gotten access to the flight line...some nice photo ops..nice and close!

Don't I know it!! When he offered, the first thing I said was, "Can I bring the cameras?" When he said yes, I was thrilled! I wouldn't want to be on the business end of any of the weaponry there. What a spectacular display and assortment. I was surprised they let me shoot inside the AWACS too!

I don't go to the airshow itself for the very same reason. It's like trying to shoot in an insane asylum. No thanks. That's why I was so excited when Charlie made the offer. We got right on the tarmac without having to wait in line and the guided tour by a true professional while "the public" had to wait for a designated escort. The line was freakin' huge!

Some great shots. As to being on the receiving end of the gatling gun on the A-10, during my time in the Air Force I delivered the 30mm ammo to the A-10s. It is really cool to watch as the bullets go in, the barrel rotates just as if it were firing. If I'm not mistaken in my memory, I worked with that aircraft during Desert Shield/Desert Storm (along with about 190 other A-10s) The best plane in the AF in my opinion!
Here's some info on the gun http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GAU-8_Avenger

The same (or very similar) weapon is used onboard Navy ships as a Close In Weapons System. It essentially throws up a wall of lead that's impossible for a low flying missile or aircraft to penetrate. I was glad the ships I was on had them!
