Default Landing Emergency????

Was at the airport on Sunday when I heard this aircraft requesting permission to use the entire length of Rwy 18R (10,000 ft) for its landing. Usuallt CRJ's use no more than 5000 ft. Unfortunately, I was not paying full attention to the radio tranmissions from before to know if it was some sort of an emergency. When the aircraft landed, I noticed an unusual device protruding from an open flap on the nose of the aircraft. You can see it in this crop of the image.

I thought perhaps it must be some sort of auxilliary power device (a mini wind mill of sort?s). The aircraft did in fact roll down to the end of the runway--did not engage the reverse thrusters.

Anyone know what may have been going on?

I know that in some combat aircraft, if the complete lost of engine power, they can deploy a wind turbine to power aux system for emergency landing. It provide enough power to control all the flight controls.

ST and Mark: So you think this was some kind of an emergency landing? I did not see any emergency vehicles along the runway.Perhaps they were conducting a test. Anyways, thanks for the information!
