Default My new Sony A57 goes to DFW

Being anxious to see how the 2X digital zoom would perform, a trip to the airport seemed like the best way to find out. There was some image degradation but I was more than happy with these 300mm times 2 results. The small twin turbo-prop was done with no digital zoom.

The images shown here are not that bad.
I have found personally that cropping after the fact in post gives better results then the in camera 2x zoom option.

Try some comparisons and see if you get the same results.

Once again the question of "how good do they really need to be" needs to be considered.

Mike, you seem to be correct. 2x zoom and 2x crop looks like a wash when you compare the two. 300mm is also easier to work with than 600mm as to the viewfinder capture. Guess I'll have to put this one in the "another un-needed option" box. Overall, though, the A57 is a very nice machine.

That's pretty impressive for a digital zoom Streets. I see some graininess in the sky, but the aircraft themselves look pretty darn good. The ones of the cockpit and FO's are neat!

Thanks Jehan. As a fellow aircraft enthusiast of aircraft photography, I appreciate and respect your comments. This was the first time that I photographed at DFW with evening light and will not be the last.
